Acne Scar Treatment

Having acne is a pain.  They flare up at during the teenage years and can continue into your 30s and 40s.

Acne is a skin condition that are referred as

  • whiteheads
  • blackheads
  • inflamed red pimples or “zits
  • congested pores or “comedones”
  • pustules
  • cysts

Acne commonly appears on the face but may also occur anywhere in the body… on the shoulder, back, arms, legs, and even on the buttocks.

They generally respond well to treatment, but still… they can leave a scar.  The scar depends on the severity of the acne condition and also on how it was treated.

The best treatment for acne scars is preventive care and minimizing the effects of acne.  There are a few self-care steps to do this :

  • Gently clean the skin with a mild, non-drying soap to remove dirt or make-up.  Clean at least once a day
  • Avoid squeezing, scratching or rubbing the affected area to prevent skin infections
  • Go with the natural look.  Use water-based cosmetics or creams and avoid the greasy ones.  Clean it off at night

There will be time where preventive care will not work and over-the-counter acne medications will need to be used.

These medications usually come in the form of creams and lotions… and are applied directly to the skin. They usually contain benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid.   And they work by killing bacteria, drying up the oil, and causing your skin to peel.

The most effective type of acne scar treatment depends on the severity of the scars being treated.  It’s best to consult a dermatologists to determine the best acne treatment for your particular situation.

In many cases, a combination of different types of procedures will likely be used to reduce acne scars.

It’s also best to wait until there is no active acne breakouts before beginning any acne scar treatment.  However, follow the preventive care until then.
